How To Become A Commercial Pilot Qualifications To Be A Pilot
What qualifications do I need to become a pilot?
Mediocrity has no room or place in an industry where stiff competition is very much evident. Hence, for you to stand out there must be something in you that gives you the uniqueness over the others, something that you have but others don’t have. Surely, you will get hired easily by any industry of your choice.
Being a pilot requires a lot of qualifications that you have to meet if you are really aspiring to work in the airline industry. Absence of any of these qualifications will be your loss, leaving you a slim possibility of getting employed in the aviation industry.
To become a professional pilot, you must obtain three licenses/ratings, private, instrument and commercial. Private pilot license requires about 50 hours flight time training. This will give you the privilege to fly for pleasure or for fun which serves as the first step in pilot training process.
Instrument rating will let you fly by reference to the aircraft’s instrumentation with no external visual reference.
Commercial license, on the other hand, requires up to approx 200 hours of training and then you need to obtain experience in terms of flight time and aircraft endorsements before you can work in major airlines. It will give you the opportunity to fly and get paid as a pilot!
As a commercial pilot, before you will be paid for flying any type of aircraft, you must meet the following requirements set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA): you have to be at least 18 years of age, be able to read, speak, write and understand English, hold a private pilot certificate or higher license from the FAA, meet the aeronautical experience requirements of a commercial pilot license applying to the aircraft category and commercial class rating (type of work) sought, take and pass the knowledge test and pass the practical flying test. In addition to these, you are also required to be in good physical condition to perform your responsibilities effectively and efficiently. You have to be a bachelor’s degree holder because major airlines prefer to hire pilot with a four-year degree. You should have attended a flight school or aviation college for you to acquire the needed skills and knowledge in the field of aviation. Of course, you should have a background about the industry where you would like to work at so that you would become a productive member of the industry. You also need to present a medical certificate to prove that you are of good health, fit for work and free from any illness that might be a reason for delays or being unproductive member. You also have to submit a commercial pilot certificate and rating considering the type of aircraft that you wish to fly and an Airline Transport Certificate for flying internationally before you will be allowed to practice your profession. In addition to medical certificate, you also have to pass a required physical examination, FAA required physical examination each year and the annual company physical examination once you become a commercial pilot.
Passing and meeting the above mentioned standards and qualifications is a must if you would like to work as a pilot in an airline industry. Failing to meet any of them might lessen the possibility of you being hired by a company. However, besides those technical requirements, positive working attitude is also very important as a pilot. You should have good interpersonal skills so that you could easily deal with and handle people of different characteristics. You must also be adaptive to changes in the industry so that you can make the necessary adjustments and of course, you must be willing to adapt the changes for the better. And finally, to qualify for the job, you must have the x-factor, something that could make you different from the other applicants. With all these, you’ll surely be getting hired.
