When You Can’t afford to Get Your Pilot’s License
Don't have eight thousand dollars to fork out for your Private Pilot's License? That's how much it can cost, or more depending on your location, to get started in your flying career. And once you get your Private Pilot's License you can't fly for compensation so if your dream is a career in aviation, you'll have to move on from there.Well, you aren't the first person to face this problem. We have interviewed many pilots and they had the same issues. Flight school is crazy expensive, in the range of $75,000-100,000. Who has that kind of cash? And it is hard to find scholarships or financial aid. The military is always an option, but if you have a less than stellar physical exam, don't pass their extensive FBI background check and survive their tough flight school you are out of luck.
But don't give up on your dreams just because there isn't "an easy way." Too many times we think if the answer isn't right in front of us, then it must be impossible and we give up. Take this as your first in flight challenge. Think creatively. Find a solution. Here are a few ways that other pilot's have found to get their training.
Tim knew he wanted to fly more than anything else in the world but like you, he couldn't afford the flight school in the tourist beach town in which he lived. Instead, he struck up a deal with a man at the local airport who ran helicopter tours and planes for aerial photography and banner ads on the beach. Tim agreed to work for the man in any way he could and in return the man gave him flight lessons. Tim paid for his FAA examination and materials himself. Then he continued working for the man, as one of his pilots while adding flight hours to his log book.
Or take, Bryan for instance. He was able to attend a top flight school and graduated with a Commercial License and all the rating he needed but he also had a huge amount of debt to repay and not enough flight hours to get the job he was targeting- a regional airline. He took as job as an Instructor Pilot at a local airlfield to gain flight hours and also had to work part time at a hotel to make ends meet.
Both Tim and Bryan are still doing what they love. Tim works as an Instructor Helicopter Pilot for the military through a civilian contractor and Bryan is a captain at a regional airline.
