Why Aren’t There More Women in Aviation?

Even though women have been involved in aviation for over 100 years, they still make up less than 5% of the US airline Transport Pilot population. Why aren't there more female pilot's

For every 100 male pilots in the US, there are only 5 female. Where are all the women who dream of aviation?

Everywhere you see an ad or commercial or even a movie that portrays a pilot, we rarely see a women in the role. Apprently, producers think that we as a public need to see a man as in charge of the plane!

The pilot's uniform is inherently masculine and has progressed little in style to suit a woman's form.

The more women that choose this career, the more things will adapt to better support women in the field but until then, training and workplace standards are set for men.

Take the previous reasons in to account and add in the high cost of aviation training and the significant amount of time required to be spent away from family life and it is understandable that so few women choose this career. There are non-profits who promote female airline pilots and even off grants to assist in the hefty licensing fees and training in an attempt to attract more women to the field.

High school girls get to spend time with women in aviation careers as part of one organization's attempt to help more women be interested in the aviation field.

Don't give up on your dreams just because you have to go against the grain to get what you want. Usually where there is the most resistance, there is the most reward when you reach your goal. Research females in aviation and non-profits who support females in the field. There is plenty of room in the cockpit for women.
